Ginger Johnson

University of Florida, BA, MA, MPH.
University of Florida, PhD candidate ‘08

University of Florida graduate student Ginger Johnson has moved to our site in Kenya to begin a research internship with Flying Kites. Ginger is developing our community outreach scheme by compiling data from the Kinangop/Njabini area to determine how we can best assist the local village. Ginger is working with community members to collect statistics and case studies. Her work focuses primarily on orphaned children residing with members of their extended families in the surrounding districts Already, her research has been instrumental in prioritizing our outreach program, and in the long term it will offer ways to measure the effects of the initiative's goals and achievements.

Nature as a Crisis Resource

Tiffany’s research investigates the healing power of nature. Her focus on children in development scenarios, childhood and trauma, and nature as a crisis resource have led to the development of a series of workshops that promote nature as a tool for peace-building in post-conflict communities.

Schedule of upcoming workshops

Newport, RI, USA

Rethinking Peace-building:
A nature-centered holistic approach to therapy within post-conflict and reconstruction scenarios.

Child Soldiers:
Understanding reasons, rights and rehabilitation.

Kinangop, Kenya

Green Spaces Community Parks and Personalized Gardens:
The construction of green spaces provides a practical means of concurrently addressing immediate psychosocial needs within post-crisis, peace-building and reconstruction settings, whilst simultaneously addressing long-term development, reconstruction, environmental and peace-building goals.

Unlike community parks and gardens, personal gardens are established in conjunction with existing bodies, such as schools or orphanages. While much of the concept is the same as for community gardens, there may be a greater emphasis on education and training, and a greater leniency towards consumables. Personal Garden programs may also incorporate greater emphasis on nature as a healer, nature as play, and nature as art.
